Out and about in woodland

How to get the most out of a season of intense colours, and intoxicating forest scents.
After all the excitement of summer, autumn turns up happily representing a season of transition and change, both for us and for Nature itself: the intense green gives way to the warmth of red, yellow, and gold of the larch; the air has a sharpness to it, the skies are clearer and everything seems to take a pull, as though waiting to fall asleep under winter’s white, comforting blanket.
And then of course, amongst the finest experiences that the season offers up, there are the leisurely strolls through the woods, appreciating the foliage, changing hues and the falling leaves in all their shades, scents and pomp. For the little ones “diving” among the leaves provides some magical moments, then perhaps transporting a few leaves home to be worked on as decorations and gifted to family and friends.
There are any number of gentle walks to undertake in these quiet weeks; a wander along the river and up towards the Andossi, the loop that leads to Lago Azzurro, or the old road to Pianazzo along which you can take in the impressive waterfalls of Catino and Pianazzo.
The more fortunate amongst us, when out and about along the valley bottom will even be able to hear the bellowing of the stag, the inimitable song of love that breaks nature’s evening silence.
And returning to the woods themselves, there will be those drawn to the “devotion” of the mushroom hunt, whilst respecting local regulations of a maximum daily limit of three
kilos! And for the bolder with energy to spare there are all manner of paths to follow on bikes,
either electric or self-propelled. A genuine alternative means of immersing yourself in the autumn climate, taking on the less frequented routes, heading for Val Febbraro perhaps, full of colour and surprises.
